Arthouse Insider host Jordan Minter visits the Hyland Cinema to find out the in and outs of running an arthouse theatre in an age of multiplexes and fancy schmancy.
It was a fun trip over to the Hyland theatre last week as, speaking for myself, I'd never been inside. Though I've driven by it many times in my life, the idea of going in to watch a flick there was enticing but always fleeting. Partly because I live in St. Thomas and partly because I've gotten used to visiting my local Cineplex. All that may be about to change.
As Jordan chatted with Manager/Booker at the Hyland, Mike Klassen, it became clear quickly how much I'd been missing out on. This age of high tech shenanigans - the A.I. button right here on screen promising perfect verbiage and grammar - is really getting under my skin. We all need more Hyland vibe in our lives - It's just true.
We're humans. Perfection is not normal. Mistakes are normal and fun and real. Not that mistakes are made at the Highland, far from it, but it is very REAL there - even as it is a very real escape, sitting with folks you may never have met but who have come to enjoy an old or semi-old favourite movie or yours. Shared experience outside of your home theatre is so important.
I want us to inhale this local gem and experience what life was like before high tech took over everything. If there's anything the Newsload will represent going forward its this. Humanity and mistakes over automation and perfection. Cherish the gifts fellow travellers and the Hyland is certainly one of them.
