Victims of Convenience: Navigating our new Time Wasting World

Have you noticed how technology, which is supposed to save us time, is kind of like a tug of war with a bulldozer? Sure it saves us time using the tech we configure and execute, but we're up against behemoths that are also playing in this new realm and for them, wasting our time, like sifting sand to find leads, seems to be of little or no concern.

In the grand tapestry of modern convenience, it seems the tables have turned, and many of us find ourselves unwittingly cast as the stars in companies' clever productions. While technology aims to streamline our lives, sometimes it feels more like a clever ruse designed to offload work onto the unsuspecting—us!

the mot obvious is the self-checkout phenomenon. While it may seem great on paper—skip the line! scan your own groceries!—in reality, it often leads to frantic moments of confusion as you struggle with uncooperative barcodes or the dreaded "unexpected item in bagging area." It's as though the grocery store is getting us to do their work under the guise of convenience.

Then there’s the delight of dealing with AI customer service representatives. Ever find yourself deep in conversation with "Anna," only to realize she's not even real? These bots are truly masters of illusion, designed to engage us in endless loops of canned responses while masquerading as helpful human beings. Before you know it, you've spent an hour discussing your account balance with what essentially amounts to a very talkative toaster.

And let’s not forget about online booking systems for everything from salons to doctor's appointments. On the surface, it seems brilliant—take control of your own schedule! But inevitably you end up in a digital maze trying to navigate through options, resulting in an exasperated Google search for “how to get a real person on the phone.”

Then, of course, spam, sent to you or putting you on a list of possible customers could mean you're inundated with calls, texts and emails. Respecting another's time has never been so old fashion in the business world where everyone is using tech tools to waste as much of it as possible on the slight chance you'll buy from them.

Even our vehicles, with their fancy diagnostic tools, seem to insist we become amateur mechanics to decipher the meaning of every blinking light on the dashboard.

In a world obsessed with efficiency and technological wizardry, it can sometimes seem like the magic act is happening at our expense. The next time you find yourself performing unpaid labour for a corporation under the pretense of innovation, take heart—you’re definitely not alone in this modern charade!
